The programme gives me the opportunity to get an objective view on my situation, which is hard to do by myself. It helps me to observe things neutrally, which helps. The coaching call has been absolutely fantastic for me in this way and I really appreciate that support.

Today has been most helpful as it's personal and has enlightened me as to how to approach a particular situation, so I can go and do the right thing: it's very beneficial.

The most valuable thing is to get the perspective of other people within the firm in the same boat, in a similar situation - different parts of the same boat but still the same boat: we all have to cope. The fact the course is running is a testament to the firm, and working through the case study scenarios on the programme is very helpful.

I really got a lot from talking with other dads today. It's opened my eyes, almost as though I've been waiting three years for this conversation, since my first child was born.

It was very helpful that the facilitator understood the firm and the nature of our work so well.

The workshop was very soon after I came back... The case studies brought out how women are feeling and it was very helpful for me on how to address concerns with my manager. That's what I was facing and it was perfect to be able to discuss it: that's how I was able to have a positive conversation and realise that my manager didn't know how I felt. If I had not gone on the programme I would have gone in blind.

Maternity Coaching in 2010

A survey by The Lawyer Magazine in January 2010 found that 20% of the country's finest female lawyers failed to return to work after maternity leave or left shortly after returning

We find it frustrating that this figure could have been halved if more support was available for the transition from working woman to working mum.

The lack of support from employers is not necessarily a refusal to help but more a lack of knowledge of how to. Access to a maternity coach or childcare consultant for emotional and practical support can ensure talented women, who love their careers, are retained.

Since over 80% of women become a mother during their working life...

Understanding how to support them is essential. Typically a mum-to-be needs support at 4 key stages of her maternity journey:

  • 3-4 months before maternity leave so that mum-to-be feels confident about handling motherhood and her career choices. We focus on career and childcare options
  • 2-3 months before return to work to boost the new mother's confidence about returning to work. This is an opportunity to discuss return to work plans, flexible working options and childcare requirements
  • 2-3 months after the return to work to progress check on how the return is going. We encourage mothers to explore opportunities and address challenges both professional and personal
  • 8-9 months after return to work because this is typically when a returned mother will stop to consider whether returning worked out for her. This session will focus on hard facts rather than assumptions and conclude with a further career plan.

We combine maternity coaching with practical support
