Driving Diversity Forward at Citi
Thought-Leader Interview
Citi's Carolanne Minashi, Head of Diversity, Employee Relations and Employee Engagement at Citi, gives Jennifer Liston-Smith, Head of Coaching at My Family Care, some insights as to how the diversity agenda is driven forward at Citi.
The starting point
Jennifer Liston-Smith: Thank you for agreeing to share your knowledge with others who have an interest in diversity. What's the most important tip you have for someone just starting out in developing a diversity strategy, whether global or local? Just where do you start?
Carolanne Minashi: I think it all has to start with a vision, a statement or set of principles; a cultural vision. You have to have a big picture vision of where you're trying to get to as company.
For Citi it's around having a company where everyone is respected and included and where there is equal access to opportunities. Most major companies have some visionary statement around their diversity & inclusion approach and that’s probably the best place to start.
If you can't get your senior stakeholders and leaders to agree on that then you’re hamstrung before you start. Companies need to think about how they want to be in the future: how they want to treat each other within the organisation, how they're going to work with each other; that's absolutely fundamental.
